John Steinbeck shedworker

Continuing our look at writer John Steinbecks life in garden offices, here are images of his Joyous Garde writing shed (named for Sir Lancelots castle), a hexagonal structure at Sag Harbor inspired by Mark Twains own garden office with fantastic views over the cove near Bluff Point. The attractive hut was built by Steinbeck himelf and he worked in a directors chair inside which he labelled Siege Perilous - he wrote Travels with Charley and Winter of Our Discontent inside.

Stay in John Steinbecks Writers Studio

Author John Steinbeck stayed and worked in this one bedroom building in Pacific Grove, California, known as The Writers Studio - he wrote The Sea of Cortez here and it has now been sensitively renovated. You can rent it out on airbnb where it has a five star rating. Tomorrow, well take a look at another of Steinbecks garden offices.
