The distractions of not being a shedworker
The distractions of not being a shedworker

A third of workers in traditional offices say they are regularly distracted for up to three hours a day, according to research by budgeting account provider thinkmoney.
The biggest source of distraction is chatting to colleagues about last nights television, relationship problems, and plans for the weekend.
Smart phones are also blamed for interrupting concentration, with workers admitting to answering personal phone calls and replying to text messages. The temptation to do online shopping or to browse the internet to look at YouTube videos, book holidays or check football scores proves too much for many people, the report shows.
Meanwhile, poor office technology, with slow internet connections and systems that crash are a frustrating disruption to the working day, along with uncomfortable chairs and buildings that are too hot. ----------------------------------------------------

The Anglo-Polish composer Roxanna Panufnik (above right - who you may have heard this morning on the radio) composes from the garden office at her London home. She talks to Sara Mohr-Pietsch in BBC Radio 3s Composers Rooms series in an excellent downloadable podcast which is atmospherically recorded from her shed about natural wood, a fully decorated interior, and the general joys of shedworking. Its an excellent programme and well worth a listen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Continuing our look at writer John Steinbecks life in garden offices, here are images of his Joyous Garde writing shed (named for Sir Lancelots castle), a hexagonal structure at Sag Harbor inspired by Mark Twains own garden office with fantastic views over the cove near Bluff Point. The attractive hut was built by Steinbeck himelf and he worked in a directors chair inside which he labelled Siege Perilous - he wrote Travels with Charley and Winter of Our Discontent inside.

The star of the comedy series Miranda and The Job Lot according to a story in the Daily Mail. "I had this office put in the garden last year," she told the paper, "because my two-bedroom Victorian coach house is quite small and I wanted to start writing comedy scripts. Its now my haven as I love being outside in my garden." The garden office was built by Harrison James. --------------------------------------------------------------------

A nice piece in the Daily Telegraph by Michael Hogan about the delights of his garden office. Heres a snippet.
"My green-and-brown, curve-roofed wooden shed - strictly an 8ft x 6ft garden office - is where I work, think, potter and play. I had it installed five years ago when the arrival of our second child meant I was unceremoniously hoofed out of my home office, replaced by cots, cuddly toys and other cute ephemera. Now I cant imagine life without it."--------------------------------------------------------------------

As regular readers will have surmised, the Shedworking staff has been on holiday for a bit, sunning itself around the Suffolk riviera. One particularly exciting trip was to Aldeburgh and The Red House, the home of composer Benjamin Britten (whose shedworking we have covered briefly previously) and his partner singer Peter Pears.
Its a fantastic place with a marvellous interactive museum/gallery, but we were most delighted with Brittens first floor studio where he composed major works including the War Requiem and Missa Brevis in D. This was a former barn/hayloft which was rebuilt by the famous architect HT Cadbury-Brown in the late 1950s. It has great light and views of the orchard and countryside as well as a very pleasant feel.
"It is a lovely house, with a big garden all round," said Britten of his home, "and Ive made myself a nice remote studio where I can bang away to my hearts content." The studio features Brittens Steinway plus his desk, other shedworking furniture and knickknacks. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

It appears that BBC newsreader and Antiques Roadshow presenter is also a shedworker. As reported in the media, she has complained to her local council about plans to build a small block of flats near her home in London, largely on the basis that this will cause noise disturbance destroy her "treasured oasis of peace". This oasis includes her garden office which she says would only be 15ft from a large condenser plant which forms part of the building application. Her letter to the council continues:
"Even in some sort of acoustic shed, there will still be a distressing level of noise. In my experience (and I work with professional sound engineers), even the best acoustic shed can reduce a noise but not deaden it altogether."
