Look out Dalston! More demolitions coming with TfLs Crossrail2
Look out Dalston! More demolitions coming with TfLs Crossrail2
TfL has announced plans for public consultation on the development of the Dalston Junction /Dalston Kingsland section of Crossrail2 - a new underground line budgetted at £28Bn. Construction is hoped to start in 2020 with lines running by 2030. TfLs has identified five Dalston sites, marked A-E on the map below, where there will potentially be considerable impact, including demolition and redevelopment of buildings, even streets.

The area shaded purple is the proposed underground platform with the new aboveground ticket offices at each end marked with a red triangle. The sites marked are on both sides of Kingsland ( east & west) and are all said to be required for Crossrail2 construction. TfL suggest that redevelopment of those and adjoining sites could contribute to the cost of the Crossrail2 development (What? More unaffordable TfL flats? Ed.)

The Nat West bank building and its neighbours on Kingsland High Street are within Site C and, across the road, all the shops and homes on the south side of Bradbury Street are within Site B.

South of Dalston Junction 574-586 Kingsland Road and. across the road, an 1860 terrace of houses and all of Bentley Street south side are at risk of demolition.

Dalstons previous experience of TfLs consultation regarding the East London Line development did not inspire confidence, as you can read about here and here. It could all have been so much better.
TfLs Crossrail2 consultation will close on 8th January 2016 . Over the next 2 months, we will publish further information to help inform your response to TfLs plans. So watch this space and post comments on this blog.

Ikea Hack Making Ikea look less Ikea ish
During my bedroom redecorating project, I began a makeover of my Ikea Leksvik dresser. I like the look of the dresser but I was ready for a change. And I changed it 7 times! Take a look at all the different looks this dresser went through before I decided what to keep.

Simple Changes for a Summery Cottage Style Look
Simple Changes for a Summery Cottage Style Look
This weekend I made some very simple and effective changes to my living and dining room that really ramped up the cottage style look I love so much.

I had two lucky breaks to kick things off - first I scored 3 sets of creamy white Ikea Aina linen drapes for a total price of $15 at a yard sale (WHOOP WHOOP!!!!!!). Thanks to the stitch witchery that Ikea loves so much, it was easy to pull the hems apart and re-iron them to the length I wanted.

Ugly carpet gone I painted underlayment to look like tavern floors!
Ugly carpet gone I painted underlayment to look like tavern floors!
Im going to share one of my favorite home improvement tricks on the cheap! Im on a limited budget so I cant exactly go out and pay thousands of dollars on hardwood flooring for every room in my house. And yet the dirty and dated carpeting has got to go. What is a girl to do?

Then I removed the padding below, the tack strips around the perimeter, all the staples and nails so the underlayment was nice and smooth.
The first thing I do is to paint the flooring with a brown porch and floor paint.
Once dry, I take a long straight edge and a Sharpie marker and make lines across the floor to simulate planks.
Next, I take basic black paint - even craft paint - and mix it with water in a bowl. I then dip a rag into the paint and water in the bowl and wipe it on the floor. I blot it and swirl it with a towel which I also use to towel to wipe the excess.
After the floor is covered, I simply let it dry. Then I sweep it one more time in order to prepare it for the poly coating.
Then I simply add two coats of polyurethane. To me, they look amazing. I throw an area rug on top and I must say you really cannot the difference from actual hardwood floors and they actually cost me nothing other than one afternoon of work.

The icky, green carpeting is gone and the room feels updated and clean. And if eventually I do have enough money for wood flooring, the surface is ready to go. But I must admit I like the painted underlayment so much, I dont feel the need to spend the money to get the same look. :-)

Look Who Found Us!
Look Who Found Us!
Look who found us in the middle of last night! We got home shortly after midnight last night and I heard a very small meow from a tree in the yard. A little coaxing and a few minutes and this little guy popped out. Meet Barney Fife~ We live just far enough out of town that people dump their animals on us all the time. This will be the fourth in just a few years. We just lost a kitty to a likely kick by a cow a few weeks ago and I felt mighty awful. I had sworn off taking in strays but how can you resist when they come in a package like this one? We think he is probably about 6-7 weeks old and was well taken care of. His belly is still pretty round and he wasnt matted and malnourished like most of the others that come around. We know he didnt come from the idiot neighbors because he would have been damaged and starved to say the least. We will keep him and hope he fares well with all the other predators in the area. He isnt afraid of the cats or dogs and loves people. We are thinking that someone that knew us was needing to find a home for this little one. We seem to be suckers for this kind of thing and apparently people know it.
I must say I am glad he decided our yard looked like a good home. Sometimes a new kitty mends a broken heart over the loss of another. I needed to mother something cute for a while. Not all of the new chicks are loving me yet and this little one wont leave my lap. Cute.

A Look Inside My Jewelry Instruction Book Photo Shoot
A Look Inside My Jewelry Instruction Book Photo Shoot

Its hard to believe that my first book, BoHo Chic Jewelry, was just released this past March
2014, and there I was last week, only six months later, flying off to Cincinnati, Ohio for the
photo shoot for my second jewelry instruction book, Soldered Alchemy. I feel so grateful and
fortunate to have the opportunity to share my ideas and designs with the world, and I really
hope that my books not only help to teach people new skills and techniques, but that they
inspire people to explore their own creativity in new ways!
This was a busy summer! Within a span of less than three months, I wrote an entire book.
A few people have asked me what writing a jewelry DIY book entails. Do I write the text? Or do I just create the projects? The answer is yes, I do it all. It basically begins with
brainstorming project ideas, about 25 or 26 projects that all are cohesive yet different from one another, each with varying difficulty from beginner to advanced. Everything has to kind
of mesh together and coordinate in a certain way (thats the cohesion I was talking about) but at the same time, every project has to be unique unto itself, and there has to be a nice
balance of different types of projects. Its not an easy task to accomplish!
In a nutshell, I brainstormed possible project ideas, and then sat down and designed each
project. Next I made each project from start to finish. This is when I also wrote the step by
step text for each project, while at the same time snapping test photos for the step by step photographer along the way. I did this so that once we were at the photo shoot, we would
know where to stop and take those important photos that displayed what was explained in
the step by step instructions described in the book. Once all the projects were completed
(and they had to be perfect, as these were the actual projects that would later be
professionally photographed for the book), I then worked on whats known as the front
matter, which is the beginning section of the book that contains the materials and
basic techniques sections, as well as the introduction and dedication. Oh, and I almost
forgot to mention, I was working under a deadline! That being said, there is not much time
to leisurely create. You really have to be focused, have great ideas, and know what youre
doing to do this type of work! But I love it.

Taking a moment to recharge before my flight.
Theres no better feeling than putting your bare
feet in the grass for a few minutes!
Once all of the text and projects are finished, its time to fly to Cincinnati to the publishers
photo studio so that they can take all of the step by step photos that accompany the text in
the book. For this, I have to pack up my entire workshop - all of the tools and materials that
I need to create every project in the book - and ship them out to the photo studio so that
when I arrive we can get right to work! Once I arrive, I unpack everything, set it all up, and
then remake every single project while the photographer takes the photos.

Sitting in the airport, waiting for my flight.

Yummy bagel I had in the airport.

Goodbye Detroit! On my way to Cincinnati. I flew from where I
live in Pennsylvania to Detroit and then to Cincinnati.

Arriving in Cincinnati

"Im in Cincinnati!" Hotel selfie before work to send to my boyfriend hehe...

Arriving in the photo studio the first day...so nice and clean! Just
wait till I get all of my supplies and materials laid out!

All of my finished projects that I had completed beforehand were
laid out on a table so that I could double check them for reference.

Some of my materials and tools, and in the bags were all of the
parts and materials that I needed for each project. It pays to be organized!

Here is where I worked!

My text was put into a layout and I used it as a guide.

In the middle of working on a project.

My fabulous photographer Christine Polomsky hard at work editing the step by step photos.
We worked from Monday through Friday, Christine taking photos at every step while
I made every project. It was a lot of work, but Christine is just awesome and we had agreat time all week! On Friday after we wrapped up the last chapter we packed up all of my tools and materials to be shipped back home to me and then I headed to the
airport to fly home. Next the photos will be edited and put into place within the
manuscript, and then in a few weeks I will do a review of the manuscript where I
answer any of my editors questions, making any needed corrections or clarifications,
making sure that each photo matches up correctly with the text. Once that is complete,
more editing reviews will be done, the beauty photography will be done (those are the
pretty photos at the beginning of each chapter and on the cover), the fabulous designer
Brianna will work her magic, and then off to the printer it goes!
The book shown being created in these photos is entitled Soldered Alchemy,
and it is being published by FW Media, and will be released in May 2015. Once it is available for presale on amazon I will announce it here on my blog! Until then, check out my previously released title, BoHo Chic Jewelry!
