Open Shelving LOVE! Project complete!
I just wanted to share my completed open shelving project! A few weeks ago, my large cabinet started to pull away from the wall. So I removed the cabinet to repair it. But once the cabinet was down, I really liked the way the counter space opened up. So I began to research the idea of open shelving. I must say, I absolutely love it! It adds a bit of pop to the kitchen and pop is always a good thing. ;-)

As a true Disney fan at heart, I like to add smatterings of Mickey Mouse or Disney magic in my projects. Nothing major, just subtle nuances usually known only to me. This time, I chose to cover the dividers in the glass jar cubby cabinets in vintage Mickey Mouse cartoon scrapbook paper. You cant see it from looking head on to the cabinet but I like that it is somewhat hidden.
Here are my shelves decorated for Valentines Day. That chocolate cake is from Hobby Lobby. It is spectacular and looks SO real. It was $30 but came down to $18 with the coupon. LOVE!
The cubby cabinet has worked out wonderfully. I found these chalkboard tags at JoAnn fabrics! I also found a thin tip chalk pen that works like a marker but can be erased at any time. Its very cool.
I like the way it opened up this space in the kitchen and gave me more counter space for tasks.
This space has gone through quite a few evolutions to get to where it is now...
When I first started to redo my kitchen, I was dealing with brass knobs, hunter green formica and honey pine trim!
I painted the cabinet trim white, changed out the hardware and painted the counters to look like granite. For details on that process, please click here.
Next, I painted the kitchen grey blue and added a ledger stone backsplash.

It has been a busy week in my living room makeover. The stone accent wall is almost complete! I still have to mortar and strike the joints, adjust the downlighting and finish the air vents.
I placed two battery operated puck lights for a lighting effect. In the future, I may install wired downlighting but these work for now. I love them! They were $20 for a package of two at Lowes and can be placed anywhere. You simply peel and stick and they come with 6 AA batteries! When are batteries EVER included? And they are LED so I am hoping the battery life will be longer than normal. They also have a high and low setting. I couldnt be more pleased with the look! But I may add a third because the ends seem dark.
I am quite excited to finish the room and I hope the wall adds some pop to the coastal New England look I am hoping to achieve. I just set a throw rug down to see how the room may look when completed.
I removed the conventional air returns and am trying a project I found on Pinterest. I will share the details in a post once completed!
Hopefully this will be done next week as I am now focusing on the ceiling treatment. A lot of indecisiveness here - I need to get busy! Thanks for stopping by.

Since tearing down the wallpaper, this small accent wall was always an idea in the back of my head. I would check for stone veneer listing on Craigslist and in the big box home improvement stores.
I eventually found some and the price was perfect. It came to be that this is actual stone - not man made so it was extra heavy and very colorful. I drove up and loaded it into the car with the help of the seller and his son. They could not be nicer. There was a LOT of stone! :-)
Then I stacked it on the driveway - completely confident that I would have this project done in a week. (Um yeah - I bought this in October). LOL
From the driveway, I moved it into the garage and that is where it is still sitting. But the pile is shrinking. Then the wall preparation began. I started with a staple gun and some waterproof tar paper.
Next came the metal lath - this stuff just rips your fingers apart - OUCH!
Then you add mortar to create the scratch coat. I let it dry completely and it was time for stone. Yay!
I was nervous about starting this so I laid it out on the driveway first. This actually didnt work too well for me - I liked doing it like a jigsaw puzzle - one piece at a time. It was actually fun!
Here is the before - the view when you walk into the front door with the scratch coat ready and waiting.
I started with the first row and I was thinking ok, I can totally to this. :-)
And I simply worked my way up the wall....
Higher and higher.... until I reached the top!
And ended with this...
I still have to icing and strike the joints but I am thrilled with the final outcome. I will post a final reveal picture when I get the area de-mortared. It is everywhere - even though I put tarps down. I even have enough to to another wall in the living room. Sweet!

When we decided to forgoe the guest room for a walk-in pantry, I felt guilty. I dont want people to feel unwelcome, I just need them to sleep in the 3 yr. old camp trailer in my driveway. We have a suite, it just happens to be out the front door. I no longer feel even the slightest degree of guilt. I love my new pantry. The only thing left is an island in the middle with more storage below it for folding laundry. One must have a great place to fold laundry.
The new pantry isnt large but filled with floor to ceiling shelves it should do the trick. So far all four wall are full of new shelving. I still may paint the walls themselves and the wood used as bracing and cleats but I can do that this winter. For now I am moving into my new space. I keep hearing "Come on out and be part of the family!" But I must admit I just dont want to. I love it in there. I spent quite a bit of time measuring all the things I planned to store in here so canning boxes and jars stacked two high would fit. I even have a spot for the ironing board and iron but it isnt in this picture. It is to the right of the vacuum. It is so nice for everything to finally have a place. Only a few things left to put in here and the old pantry will be empty. Then that space will be ready to have the bathroom expanded into it. I need a spa bathroom next. It will likely be next year as I think our project list is complete for this one.
