How to DIY Your Garden Shed Project

How to DIY Your Garden Shed Project

What should be your first criteria in choosing garden workshop sheds? The first question you should really ask is: "Whats the shed for?" You cant just box (pun intended) a shed for storage; these are as versatile as they can get. You can even build a shed as temporary shelter, use it to bunk guests in for short stays; you have to ensure all the creature comforts are provided for, though. Then again, a shed is first built for functionality, and any secondary uses like accommodation should be considered an afterthought. Theres no limit to the scale of the shed youll build, but youll youve built it too small or too big, either if you have clutter around it or theres so much room youre using it as storage for throwaways.

A Space to Call Your Own

You need the space to build, and it has to be conducive for construction. This is easier said than done if you consider moisture and water sources. Garden sheds are built on top of irrigated soil, and you have to keep the moisture away if you want your shed to last through the cycles of seasons. Make sure you clear a spot on higher ground, away from water sources. If you cant, then at least ensure theres ample drainage around it. One of the many concerns of finding that cozy spot is it compromises accessibility. Even if you lay down concrete foundations for your shed, moisture will still creep up from this to wood, leading to mold, rot, and mildew.

Choosing the Right Materials

With the variety of materials available to you, you have to consider those appropriate to your climate. Some states also enforce building codes on the simplest construction. Yours should comply down to the last detail, both for your safety and for the feasibility of your project. Its fortunate some sheds are built from kits, so you dont have to worry about violating building codes; at the very least, youll have fewer concerns to cover for in construction.

A Feasible, Convenient Alternative

Kit sheds are your best options, in terms of cost and convenience, and youll also have more variety in design to choose from, designs you can build without slaving it out in custom work. This is recommended if you dont have advanced skills in woodwork or construction, but you still cant underestimate the time and effort youll invest in the construction. You can always have hired help if the project is too much for you. Building garden workshop sheds should be a breeze if you go the cost-effective, efficient route. It’s also recommended if you want to spare yourself from the worries of construction.

DIY Holiday Snowy Palladian Windows for 5 00!

DIY Holiday Snowy Palladian Windows for 5 00!

And ever since I was ten years old, the home from Holiday Inn was my dream house.  I always loved the windows and the front porch:

And the same windows and set design were apparent in White Christmas:
Source:  Hookedonhouses.net
And I also love the windows in the Christmas movies White Christmas and Holiday Inn.  So one night I drove up to my house and saw this:

It just hit me that this is SO plain and blah.  So I was thinking that I could probably create arched windows with poster board and white electrical tape and I did.

These were my inspiration pics whilst trying to devise a pattern.  I used plain white poster board and cut out an arch and taped it to the top of each window.  Then I cut out a smaller arch and placed that with clear tape.  Then I simply used white electrical tape which I found at my local home improvement store for only $2.00 a roll.  It was so easy to work with!

I miraculously found this window grid at at the Habitat ReStore in South Bend, Indiana and it fit the width of my window exactly.   So I used it as a pattern for the perfect arch.  I then placed the poster board in the windows first.  Then I went over the board with the electrical tape to further make the pattern.

I then cut out "snow" pieces and taped them in the corners for that old world Dickens Christmas feeling like this:

If I had more time, I would have added more "window panes" but I did achieve the look I was shooting for.  I am sure they would have looked more festive with more squares and snow.  They look adorable in either daytime or night time.  I have the look of expensive arched windows for about $5.00 total.  :-)

DIY Painted Leaves Tutorial

DIY Painted Leaves Tutorial

I published this blog post so late in the season last fall, that I wanted to share it again
so that everyone has a chance to start collecting those leaves while theyre falling! I think
that you get the best painted leaf results when you press your leaves for at least a few weeks
before painting them, if not longer. This gives the leaves time to press completely flat,
and gives the moisture a chance to escape, so look for freshly fallen leaves and press those.
Here is the original post:

After painting acorns a few weeks ago, we were ready to move on to painting leaves!
This is a simple project that has beautiful results, is a lot of fun, and everyone in the family can participate. I think the variety of shapes of leaves combined with the different paint
colors is what was so appealing to me about this project. Check it out and let me know what
you think!

First we collected fallen leaves that were mostly brown, but not too dried out. Our leaves

were still a bit pliable but not crumbly. After we collected a nice variety of leaves, I
placed them between a stack of heavy books for over a week to completely flatten them out.
The longer you leave them between the books, the better your end result. I recommend
leaving them between books for at least a week. I flattened a few for three days, and later
found that after we painted those that they curled up a bit once the paint dried. If your
leaves are still green, you will want to press them in between sheets of newspaper in between
the books. This will help absorb some of the moisture from the leaves as they dry out.

Next we gathered our supplies: a variety of acrylic paints (I used whatever I already had at
home), some newspaper to protect our table top, a few plates to serve as palettes, a variety
of craft paint brushes, a cup of water to clean our brushes with, some wax paper to place
our leaves on while they dried, and a few paper towels.

We used a variety of acrylic craft paints

A few fine-tipped brushes were great for painting thin lines and detailed designs

I started with this leaf. Nice and dry and flat and ready to paint!

I began by painting a thin line just inside the edge of the leaf. I loved the way this
metallic gold craft paint contrasted with the rust and brown colored leaf.

Simple lines and dots

I love the vibrant autumn colors

Beautiful end result

I loved seeing everyones unique, individual style come out when they painted their leaves

fancy leaf by duane

I think our leaves would look fantastic framed behind glass in a picture frame and hung
on a wall...

What do you think?
Which is your favorite?
