How to DIY Your Garden Shed Project

Choosing the Best Plants for your Garden

Many times we buy plants on impulse then find there is nowhere in the garden that really suits them.

Before buying plants carefully examine your garden to see how much sun and shade it gets, whether the soil is well drained or waterlogged and whether your aspect is sheltered or windswept. Youll then be equipped to go and buy the best plants for your situation; shade-loving plants for the sheltered areas, sun-lovers for the warm spots, drought-resistant plants for the parched areas which may be either sunny or shaded, and swamp plants for the poorly-drained parts.

But wait! Test your soil first, to determine the pH level of your soil and what kind of nutrients you need to add, if any. Is the soil acid or alkaline? Most plants prefer soil that is slightly acidic, but there are some that must have alkaline soil to grow. You can alter the soils pH level, but its much easier to simply plant for the soil you have.

Now you are ready to plant. Well - almost. Will you plant in groups or singly? If you buy one of everything your garden may seem rather spotty. Group plantings are organised, harmonious and you can vary the color for interest.

Before planting out, place your chosen plants around the garden bed in their pots to see how they will look. Re-arrange them until you are satisfied. Grouping plants in sets of threes or fives usually looks better than planting in groups of even numbers. Be sure that you have an interesting combination of colors and textures of plants. Tall plants should go to the back, or the centre if your garden will be viewed equally from all sides. Try to keep your plants away from trees. The roots of trees are fiercely competitive and will steal all the nutrients and moisture meant for your flowers.

The right color scheme is one way to maintain the harmony in your garden. Imagine the color of the flowers when they are in bloom. Some colors may clash with others, but can still be planted side-by-side if they have a different blooming season. Foliage color is also important. Many flower plants have silver, grey or purplish foliage that is just as attractive as the flower. This means that they are still attractive well past the blooming season and so have added value.

National Beach Hut Competition Love Your Hut of the Year

The lucky winner of ‘Love Your Hut of the Year’, which claims to be Britain’s biggest national beach hut competition, can win a £500 shopping spree at Cath Kidston to lavish on their hut.

The owner of the hut crowned as the Best in Britain will be awarded £500 to spend exclusively at Cath Kidston (either in-store or online) or, if they like their hut just the way it is, a rather decadent ‘ultimate’ picnic hamper and four-person dining set. Picnic hampers will also be awarded to the second and third placed huts, and all winners will get a bespoke, weatherproof plaque to proudly show off to their neighbours.

‘Love Your Hut of the Year’ launched back in April and the team at Love Your Hut, beach hut and garden office insurance specialist, emphasise that the ‘best’ hut might not be the biggest, most expensive or lavish, it’s what it means to the owner that counts. For example, there’s often a strong emotional attachment, with some huts staying in the same family for several generations.

Owners are invited to enter their hut or chalet in the competition, submitting at least one picture and a few words, exclusively via www.loveyourhut.co.uk. Submissions can be viewed on a dedicated Instagram page: @loveyourhutoftheyear. The competition is open until midnight 21August, with the winners being announced the following week.

Nick Abson converted his selfbuild garden room into a workshop and has blogged excellently about the experience over the last three years from the intital build right up to the present at The Small Workshop. Its extremely thorough and a definite must-read for anybody thinking of doing something similar. Heres what Nick says:

I did the building work myself, with some help on the heavy lifting, and it took a while (about a year), with the slow progress mainly down to my complete lack of relevant experience. The designs were done in Sketchup, and the building is constructed with the materials typically used in commercially available garden rooms: structurally insulated panels, cedar cladding, ‘mini plinths’ footings and epdm rubber on the roof. Now the building is done I am focused on the inside and turning it into a small but useful space.

How to build your own workshop

Steps In Building Your Own Shed

In my previous article, I talked about the things you need to consider before you actually build your own shed. If you haven’t read that one, I’ll break it down right here for you real quick. First you need to choose a design and decide on what materials you want to use. I recommend using sustainable and eco-friendly materials. We’re all about reducing our carbon footprints here. Next, gather all your materials and your tools. Have all of them set and ready to go. Last and most importantly, you need a basic know-how in carpentry or have someone skilled to help you on this project. Safety should always be a primary concern.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get down to business. I will be presenting an overview on how to build a basic shed. Building one is easy and very cost effective. Not to mention, it’s a great feeling knowing you built something with your own two hands. Read here for the other benefits of DIY cheap sheds and garages.

Step 1

Get the necessary building permits. Different cities have different rules when it comes to building a shed. There are places where it is not necessary to get a permit because a shed is considered an accessory to a house and is not really qualified to be called a building. While other places have jurisdictions where if a piece of housing exceeds a specific square by foot measurement, it will be subject to limitations and restrictions.

Step 2

Armed with a permit and all your materials, it’s time to build the floor or the base of the shed. Construct the frame and the skids. Then equally space your joists and lock them into place. Then cover with your actual floor.

Step 3

Then proceed to the walls. First, build the wall frame with equally spaced wall studs. Make sure you get the correct measurement so when you put up the walls, they will fit perfectly with the base. After you have lifted the walls locked them in place, next thing to do is to cover one side of the wall with your choice of sheathing. Then cover your sheathing with a house wrap. A house wrap ensures that your walls will always remain dry throughout the year.

Step 4

Now all that’s missing is a roof. Figure out the height and the slope that you want for your roof. Then install the ridge and connect the rafters. For the actual roof, you have the choice of either roof shingles or a tin roof. Follow the instructions on how to install your roof from the manufacturer.

Step 5

For the finishing touches, install the door, the windows and the wall cladding. All of these are fairly quick and easy to install so it should not be a problem for you.
