They Are Finally Here!
They Are Finally Here!
The laying hen chicks that I can finally become attached to and they wont become dinner, soon or ever, are finally here and I am so excited I can hardly stand it!!! Can you tell? My dad would have a stroke if he knew I used that kind of a run on sentence. He doesnt read this blog so I am safe. Dont tell him:-D
It really is still amazing to me that chicks can ship the day they are hatched and arrive in good shape. Ours came from a hatchery in Texas and all arrived alive and are still that way. The USPS called at 8:45 this morning and told us to come get them. We were ready for them. I had to work so Doyle picked them up and unloaded them into the stock tank that will be home for the next couple weeks. The big brooder is in the chicken house so all our overtime to finish it is for a good cause.
I will say that I ordered 30 girl chicks and only 27 showed up. Someone working in the hatchery cant count. Kind of ticked me off but it is what it is. At least the ones I got are all safe and sound. The other gripe I have is that I am pretty sure they also shorted me some Gold Laced Wyandottes and added more Black Australorps but didnt mark any of that on the incorrect packing slip. Of course I called to express my feelings. But I was nice and they promised to refund the price of 3 chicks. I am anxious to see what I actually got over the next couple weeks. I may be calling again. It wouldnt irritate me if they took ownership of the problem but I had to wait 3 months to get them as it was and now the order is wrong. I also paid extra, almost double to get pullets, which are girl chickens, and the packing slip says that straight run was shipped on at least one breed. That means I will likely have roosters and I dont want roosters. But maybe the roosters will be the life of the party!
Arent they cute? They seem so small after you look at the 4 week old meat chicks. They are not housed in the same place but I still feed and water the others and they look like Baby Hueys, as my friend Brenda calls them. So I thought I would share what has completely consumed all of our time of late. Seems kind of anti-climactic after all the preparations that took place but their new home is a palace and I am so excited for them to get big enough to check it all out.

Its Here Downton Day is finally here! Happy viewing

Finally! I have bided my time waiting for Season 3 of Masterpiece Classics Downton Abbey watching the Notre Dame football team go 12-0 and become number one in the country, Memorial Day, Wimbledon, Labor Day, the US Open, Halloween, Christmas and New Years, etc.

But, alas, the time has finally come. It is so funny how people are making such a big deal about this but if you dont get, you obviously arent watching. I cannot wait for those first few beats of that invigorating music, the ringing of the bells on the servant wall, etc. I cannot wait. I hope you are excited too and I simply wanted to wish you all Happy Viewing.

I have not cheated and read the spoilers so I really only have a few inklings of what is in store for the Crawleys. Are you going to watch? There is so much going on with the NFL playoffs and Once Upon A Time coming back on but Downton will reign supreme tonight for me! Enjoy!

Finally Thundercloud Plum Finally!
Finally Thundercloud Plum Finally!
Since this is a garden blog, and chickens are not actually flowers, I thought I would share a few blooms in my yard right now. We planted this Thundercloud Plum 5 years ago, at least. It has done absolutely nothing in my landscape. Its bloom is pathetic and the thing just does not seem to grow. Except from the base of the trunk. It grows there just fine. Weedy tree comes to mind when I look for descriptors for this species. Last year I poured on the water, killed off all the grass around it and fertilized the heck out of it. Well, Ill be. It bloomed more than one bloom. Finally. I am not a very patient person and this tree was about be yarded out of the landscape. If you dont perform and I dont kill you, you may be on the short list. It was. It still might be but a stay of execution is in force at least this year. I think I might like it after all. I just seriously hope this isnt its last hurrah before it dies. Sometimes that happens to me too.
One thing I am still unhappy with is its scrubby growth habit. All the limbs seem to go up and not out. Doyle actually fashioned some spreaders out of wood for me to push the limbs apart. Hopefully they will grow that way now. The nursery I purchased this from says the limbs will "relax" as it grows and it will be full and round. I think they are pulling my leg. Dang nursery. They actually no longer guarantee their trees for a year (or even a season) anymore either. I dont think I will buy from them anymore. The very, very, very old man who owned it his whole life died. The people who took over (possibly his children) dont seem to understand customer service very well. Poor Mr. Carnifix, I sure hope he cant see what is going on in his earthly nursery. I dont think he would like it very well. But he might like my Thundercloud Plum now. It does have nice blooms.

Grey Guest Room Reveal Finally!
Grey Guest Room Reveal Finally!
Its done! Its finally complete! And you know that feeling, that perfectly awesome series of emotions when a room is finally done and you cant stop looking at it! LOL Ok its time for a reality check - here are the awful BEFORE pics. I know - I have WAY too much stuff.
This space is a guest room which, in actuality, had become a mini storage unit in my house. I can post these pictures now only because the room no longer looks like this! It was full of holiday decorations, Disney collectibles, throw pillows (I never realized - Im apparently an addict) and anything else I could simply throw in. It was like a giant Tupperware cabinet and I hated to open the door! LOL

Enough was enough! I had bought this gorgeous bedroom set from Craigslist and it was taking up a lot of space in my garage as I had lost my motivation to do anything with it. In the pictures it looked amazing, but when I got there, it was actually a dresser they tried to paint white and it was awful. But I knew how pretty it could be so I bought it. And then it just sat. And sat. And sat.

I scrubbed the wood drawers with a brush and bleach and water and let them dry in the sun. I wanted a clean and fresh drawer for my stuff so I opted to paint the interiors of the drawers a Tiffany blue. Two cans of paint samples was enough to give each drawer three coats by my sister and I. I love the way they turned out.

The hardest part of the room was parting with and reallocating the clutter. Once that was done, I was left with this room with lime green carpeting which had to go, lace curtains and Victorian wallpaper and border. I remember my Mom doing this room in the early 90s as her "jewelry room". She was an antique jewelry collector and she would spend hours in this room inspecting and repairing her pieces so it was a little bit bittersweet making this room over. But I think she would totally approve.
The removal of the wallpaper was the worst! It was border on top of wallpaper. I mean hey, it was the 90s. Everyone had "border". It took a few days with fabric softener, a lot of hot water and a steamer to get it done. Thankfully, my sister is a wall repair guru so she went to work with a tub of joint compound and endless amounts of sandpaper. Once complete, it was time to prime the walls and paint.

I HATE hate hate removing wallpaper! Its gross and sticky and clean up is always unending.
The paint color is from ACE Hardware Clark and Kensington line. It is Late Night Serenade and it was perfect! I seriously couldnt love the color more as it is rich and warm and perfectly contrasts with the white trim and furniture.
This sweet area rug is from Target and it is really nice quality for under $150. It is a 7 x 10. I seriously danced around the room at this point and I mean literally danced. No clutter, fresh paint, no more icky green rug - I couldnt be more thrilled!

Here are some more after pics! I found the chair at HomeGoods about three years ago and it fits perfectly - I love sitting in it and just taking in the room. Such a difference and I hope you enjoyed me sharing it with you. Thank you.

I found the bedding - all new in package on ebay for $38 shipped! WHA? I know! It is Ralph Lauren Blue Paisley Suite and retails for over $800! Included were the comforter, two shams and a bed skirt. Can we say swoon?
