One Room Schoolhouse Greenfield Township Huron County

This restored one-room schoolhouse is the second one Ive found in Greenfield Township located in Huron County, Ohio. Just like the school in Sandusky Township this one resides under the care of the township and sits next to the maintenance garage. It is probably used as a polling place at election time and a public gathering place for other occasions and events.

A sound roof and modern replacement windows keep with the traditional look and ensure this building will be around for many years to come.

My son and I discovered this school during a road trip returning from Lake Erie a few weeks ago. Shortly before we passed through the area a car crash occurred along the State Route on which we were traveling. A detour was set up by the authorities to route traffic around the crash that led us through the small village of Stueben and right to the schoolhouse. I didnt have my camera but managed to get a few good shots to share with my cellphone.

2013 in Review Part 3 Room Makeovers

Time for another installment of 2013 in Review!

2013 was the year that I found "The Look" I wanted for my home. I thought the rule was 1 year in your home!! Oh well, 3 years is ok by me - I now know exactly what I do and don't like and this year I was able to put it together in a way that pleased me.

This was also the year that rooms came together. I finished the 2nd bathroom (thank you God!), guest room, laundry room, master bedroom, living room and dining room. Yay!! I also made over the main bathroom for the 4th time. Yep, I change my decor like I change my clothes... well, almost!

My bedroom was completely done over - walls, trim, bedding, furniture, doors, lighting - phew! DONE!!!

Cottage Dining Room with Painted Furniture

Now that my dining room has new curtains and my hutch has a new paint job, it was time to change up the space a bit more.

I love my ladder back chairs. I have 3 of them, two that match and one that is slightly smaller. This is what they looked like originally.

Oy that orange!!!!! Thankfully now a distant memory...

Meat Chicken Room

I promised to show pictures of our new meat chicken room so here they are. I think the room turned out very nicely. We only used 10 2x4s, which a friend gave us for free, and some old 3/4in. 12" wide boards that were rotting in the loft of the barn. They werent good for anything but this purpose, but they made dandy walls. We have rectangular wire fencing coming from another friend and that will complete the walls above the wood wall partitions up to the ceiling. I am pretty happy with how it all turned out. We are saving our pennies to build the big new laying chicken house so the meat chicken room needed to be a thrifty project. Mission accomplished.

This took up about 1/6 th of the old milking barn. The goats have another room we walled off in the opposite corner. They will keep the meat chickens company. Ollie, the pygmy goat, was actually living inside a chicken house with the chickens when we got him. He liked the birds and they apparently liked him too. Maybe he will feel right at home with the chickens.

This is a view with the door open. It also has a large door to the outside barnyard on the opposite end. This room may serve several purposes in the future. Doyle thinks it would be the perfect pygmy goat kidding room. I say we are full up with pygmy goats for now. We still need to put plexiglass over the old windows as they are not very draft proof. They should provide nice daylight for the birds. There are two windows in this room.

This view is looking out from inside the new room. Notice all the fishing poles against the wall. Doyle had started buying new poles saying his were all broken. I found at least double that amount in a massive pile with fishing lines securing them all together. I started cutting and amazingly none of them were actually broken, just tangled to the point he wasnt able to use them so he bought new. I fixed that for him and he is tickled pink that he has so many usable poles now.

And finally this will be their home when they first get here. It will still get cold at night when the chicks arrive on May 8th so the metal bar across the top will hang two heat lamps. This feeder/waterer is actually 5 ft. across, it just looks small in this picture.

That completes the tour of the new meat chicken room. I am happy with how it turned out. I like the barn a lot better now that it isnt full of crap scattered and piled up every where. It just about killed my husband to clean it with me but he did and I must say we did a good job. It didnt even take long once we buckled down and got it done. I love neat and tidy. Oh, I almost forgot...... my in-laws gave us a large old freezer that did not work anymore. It was cleaned when it broke and has just been stored for years. We will store a huge quantity of chicken feed in it. That way it is air tight and rodent proof. Now all I need are the chicks and I am all set!

Interior Window in Kitchen Dining Room Wall

I installed this awesome window between the old pass thru which existed between the kitchen and dining room. I found this window on close out for $50 at a local home improvement store. I had no idea what I was going to do with it but I knew that I could not pass up such a sweet deal! Here are updated pictures of my ALMOST finished kitchen - cannot wait for it to be complete!

The old pass thru - just sort of an oddity and it became a place to hand stemware glasses.

These are pictures of the original large pass thru. It was nice and functional but it was always sort of a strange design choice.

Little did I know that if - on a whim - I held the circle window up that it would fit and could fit perfectly. I was excited about how it could look!

Years ago, before the internet, before Pinterest, I used to clip pictures from magazines and catalogs which were intriguing to me with regards to home interiors. Some I have had since I was a teenager and I still love them after all these years. I recently came across this picture which, interestingly, I also found on the internet. It was the interior window placed between a dining room and kitchen for interest and light. After all these years, this design vision is becoming a reality in MY house! Pretty cool.

So using some very bright neon poster board for a template - LOL - I measured it out, cut some drywall and two by fours and secured the window in place.

This is how it looks from the dining room side - it adds a beautiful contrast to the deep navy wall. It still needs to be spackled and sanded but one room at a time. :-)

Almost ready to be installed - cant wait to see how it looks! Fingers crossed that it would fit! It did!

It was quite tricky cutting the ledger stone to fit around it. I simply took my time and did it right.

Starting to be able to envision the final product - it was going to look better than I hoped it would.

And the final product - I absolutely love it! It still allows light to pass thru but adds a touch of elegance to the pass thru. Im so glad I hung onto that picture from a magazine all those years. :-)

Guest Room Cottage Style Makeover

A few weeks ago I stumbled on an unannounced clearance sale on Target's Rachel Ashwell shabby chic quilts. I bought a single sham and a twin sized quilt for a total price of $35. I had intended to use the quilt as a throw but when I got home, my plans changed...

My name is Anne and I have a linen addiction. Over the years I've accumulated many quilts in different styles, shapes and colours. I adore them!!! Only thing is, they are sitting in a linen closet instead of being on view. Thank you Target, for inspiring me to a guest room quilt explosion makeover!

Farmhouse Dining Room Transformation

I've bounced around all over the place with my design choices over the last 3 1/2 years, but I am coming home to my tried-and-true favourite which is country cottage. Although nowadays it seems to be called "Farmhouse" so I'm going with the flow!

I have made over my dining room a few times but when I found my new hutch, I found my style. I knew exactly the look I wanted and the hutch makeover turned out even better than I had imagined it. Don't you love it when that happens?!

60 Craigs List Dining Room

A few weeks ago I found an oval dining table on Craig's List. It is EXACTLY what I have been searching for! I was so excited. The table was only $50 so I was prepared for it to need refinishing. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was in reasonably good condition!

It wouldn't fit in my car, though, so I was looking at it with an eye to taking the whole thing apart when the man selling it offered to deliver it to my house. A very generous offer considering we didn't live in the same town! Several days later, the table was delivered AND set up by the man and his wife. How sweet is that?! Here is a look at the table when I first got it home:

1970s Chandelier for the Guest Room

I'm always on the lookout for things I can upcycle and use to decorate my home. Last fall I found a 1970s wood and antique brass chandelier at the dump. It was missing the screws and glass shades but I liked the overall look of it so I dragged it home for my guest bedroom.

A few coats of white spray paint breathed new life into this light fixture. Of course I was so excited to see it painted I forgot the obligatory before shot. Sigh. It looked a little like this one (see below) only the wood is oak and was a lighter stain colour.

One Room School House Cranberry Twp

Today was my sons first day back to school after the summer vacation. Hes in the eighth grade this year and had he been born 120 years ago he might have gone to a school that looks like this. Fortunately his school building is a bit bigger than this one.

I discovered this wood sided schoolhouse in the northern corner of Crawford County earlier this year on a recumbent ride. The well cared for structure sits close by the road and is near a farm.
