Giant Clams Could Help Us Make Better Screens and Solar Cells

Researchers from the University of California in Santa Barbara are investigating how giant clams produce each of their shades. These creatures, native to the Pacific and Indian oceans, have cells known as iridocytes that use their structure to scatter light waves and produce iridescent shades. In the species Tridacna maxima and Tridacna derasa, for example, the clams generate their white hues by mixing colors in a way similar to how video displays mix red, blue, and green pixels to create white. Scientists are hoping that by better understanding how this phenomenon works in giant clams they will be able to create more efficient solar panels and color displays in the future.

New Chicks and Nieces to Help!

We ordered 40 more Cornish Cross meat chicks to arrive yesterday so I enlisted some helpers to pick them up and install them into their new home with me. Here are my nieces, Emma and Elle, at the post office with our new shipment of chicks. The girls were still stymied as to why on earth we got our chicks from the post office.

Emma, in pink, really wanted to touch them but ultimately lost her nerve. Next thing I heard was "you touch them Elle. I think youll like them."

We unloaded them while counting how many we got this time. Last time we conveniently forgot to count for extras during the unloading phase. Much harder to count them when they are running around. 43 was our total, the hatchery sent two packing peanuts.

One forgets just how tiny they are when they arrive as two day old chicks. Hard to believe our last batch yielded some 8.75 pounders. The girls wondered why we got more so I told them we would eat them when they got bigger. Elle said "Thats GROSS!" I promised not to eat them until they werent cute anymore. Neither girl understands they concept that the grocery store stocks chicken that used to look like this too. How wonderful it would be to be three again.

These do contain several hundred, or even thousands of pieces and staying organized is going to be key to your success. If you tools that will make the job faster would be a power drill or two and a couple of helpers. These are not required but will save you hours of assembly, not to mention some cursing.

The other type of outdoor shed kit are more suited for somebody with a little more knowledge in the building department. They are kits that contain various fasteners that join together two or more pieces of lumber, alleviating any angle or miter cuts. All you have to do is cut the lumber using straight cuts, eliminating all of the time it would take to measure out and Mark the various angles.

These kits are fairly cheap and will run you on average about $30-$50. You can join more than one together to make a larger shed if you would like and they even have optional kits for special features that you may want to include. As I mentioned before these sheds will require you to install the siding, roofing and finish material yourself. This is good because it allows you to have more control over the finished look of your shed.

How families help small businesses

Nearly two thirds of Britain’s microbusinesses rely on support from friends and family to run their business, new research has revealed. Friends and relatives put an average of six hours a week into helping these microbusinesses stay afloat, the latest Big Issues for Small Businesses report from Lloyds Bank Insurance claims.

Whilst four out of 10 microbusinesses pay their family and friends with an average salary of £14 per hour, just over half said this support is unpaid.

This support ranges from helping to make business decisions (40%), completing practical tasks (34%), running errands (29%), managing social media accounts (10%), and helping with childcare (8%). While partners are most likely to head up the family support economy (43% of businesses are helped by their other half) one in five (19%) also rely on their children, and almost three in ten (29%) use friends.

The benefit of this help lifeline is keenly felt by the nation’s microbusinesses, with the vast majority (84%) saying the contribution of friends or family has had a positive impact on their business. Aside from increasing revenue (13%), increasing productivity (25%), making the business more manageable (35%) and providing emotional support (30%), nearly a quarter (24%) feel the help of friends and family is crucial in keeping their business running.

One in 10 (10%) microbusiness say their business would not be able to go on without this support.

Damien McGarrigle, head of business insurance at Lloyds Bank Insurance, said: “Starting up and running a business can be all-consuming, with family and friends often rallying around small business owners to ensure they are successful. However, microbusiness owners cannot solely rely on personal contacts to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“Our research found that a third of those polled experienced problems in the past year from technology failures to employee sickness which resulted in more than a quarter operating at reduced capacity, so it is vital for business owners to know their options and have the right insurance in place to safeguard their business.”

The report highlighted a knowledge gap when it comes to protecting their business, with a quarter (24%) of microbusiness unaware that having certain types of relevant insurance for their business is a legal necessity, for example having employer liability if the business employs staff. ----------------------------------------------------
