Kitchen Makeover continued Patio Doors

The kitchen is finally in the home stretch and I couldnt be more excited and relieved! It has been quite the undertaking but the changes have been completely worth it as I love the emergining feel of the new kitchen. Here is my new decal - BE OUR GUEST - obviously from my most favorite Disney movie of all time, "Beauty and the Beast." I like the way this incorporates a touch of Disney magic and the plain sentiment of welcoming people into my home for a vist, a meal or beyond. I think it is such a softer look than the green and black color scheme.

The old kitchen table and the slanted wall project which I liked very much. It was made with wood trim and scrapbooking paper taped to the wall.

Here is the new slanted wall treatment! I love it - the texture, the clean white color and the crisp lines add a touch of coastal chic. I simply used wood trim to get the look. The light from is actually a front porch lantern but I love the way it adds drama to the table. It was from a Habitat for Humanity ReStore in South Bend, Indiana. New in box, it was only ...... wait for it...... $28! Im gushing!

The pub table is my sisters kitchen table. She has moved in with me post-divorce so she can take a breather and figure out her life. Her pub height table fills up the space nicely.

Guest Bedroom Makeover 30 Day Challenge!

One of my favorite blogs to read almost everyday is BetterAfter.net. I am sure you are a fan as almost everyone is. :-) Recently, I saw this post and it was on a blog called Thrift Diving. It was about ending decoration procrastination and finally getting to that room that you have been putting off for one reason or another. Weve all been there - I still am and so I decided to get involved in the next round this August!

This started August 1 and we have 30 days to complete the project from start to finish. It seems like a long time but wow, here it is a few days in and I have made very little progress. Im starting to panic and we are only 3 days in... not a good sign! :-)

I have decided to tackle the dreaded middle bedroom in my house. It now resembles an in-house storage unit more than a bedroom. It has become the catch all place for all of my holiday decorations and Disney items. What a waste of space! I have decided to tackle it head on. Here are the pictures of the space .....

Dont ask me what happened to Santas head - I have no idea! LOL Hopefully, I will find it before Christmas arrives. ;-)

That mountain of stuff is actually four large bins stacked on top of one another. I am realizing I have WAY too much Christmas stuff. It is time to lighten the load.

More wallpaper and lace window treatments over vertical blinds. YES, I said vertical blinds. And you can see a LOT of wallpaper. There will be a pang of sadness as I tackle this room because my Mom so loved the Victorian inspired wallpaper and draperies. But I know if she was still here, she would be helping me strip the walls clean to ready them for paint. I just know how much she loved this room.

I am looking to have a dark grey room with bright white accents! I have almost everything needed to do this room over as I have been hoarding things for a few years now. Whenever I saw a great deal on something for the room I envisioned, I would buy it and store it away. Here are some things I have at the ready:

This is the picture from the Craigslist ad for a bedroom set. I purchased this and it has been sitting in my garage for a few years now. Here are the pieces I have to scrape and re-paint!

I still love the lines of this set! I am going to paint it white again but the paint they used is textured and they didnt do a very good job. So it needs to be stripped down and painted again. I am going to paint the hardware silver instead of oil rubbed bronze. I want a more polished look.

I found this bench at a thrift store and I love the lines of it. It is also going to be painted white and the cushion reupholstered. The top has three marble inlays which may pose a problem but I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

I found it to be strikingly similar to the one in this inspiration photo...

I also found this accent chair at HomeGoods that has been sitting in plastic waiting to be put into place. I cant wait until the room to be done so I can take the plastic off and have a seat.

So that is the plan for this makeover! I am not sure I will make the August 31st deadline, but even if I dont, I will be that much further along than I would have been. Obviously, emptying the room will be a daunting task. I dont have very much storage space and I have a bunch of decorations for Halloween and Christmas. I would hate to part with them simply because I dont have anywhere to put them in the off-season. But if I stay focused on how the room will look once completed, I know I will find a way!

Master Bedroom Makeover Cottage Style

With cottage style sweeping through my home, it was time to rethink my master bedroom decor. I had enjoyed the look I had going on, but it was not light, bright and airy.

I had a couple of boosts this year - Graham & Brown offered me free wallpaper and D. Lawless Hardware sent me a second set of the antique handles I had used on my antique washstand project. With my free wallpaper, a can of paint in a greige tone and a can of Ben Moore Simply White paint I took on the bedroom challenge once again...

I began by installing a high wainscot with the textured bead board wallpaper. I used 1x4 pre-primed mdf molding to cap the wainscot. Then I painted the molding to match the trim and I painted out the Lenox Tan paint with a half shade of CIL's Manuscript. I love this paint colour!!

Night Stand Makeover How to add Height Style to a Night Table

I have an old style, hand made night stand that I didn't terribly like much but it did the job. Then I got my "princess-and-the-pea" extremely high king-sized bed and this old style night table was much lower than the top of the mattress. Why are mattresses so huge these days anyway???

I made over the night stand several years ago, stenciling the top with a Fleur-de-lis pattern that I liked but with my new cottage style look I decided to take the time to fix up this night table once and for all.

Foyer Makeover Painted Hardwood Floors I love them!

Here is the finished product with the high gloss varnish for floors. Wow - it really made them POP when I put it on. Just when I thought they couldnt look any better... I love this! It actually kind of makes me laugh - when I came up with the crazy idea, I had no idea they would turn out this realistic looking. So much better than the white ceramic tile... I wasnt a fan. :-)

Ok this is a work in progress but I am so excited that I had to share before they are completely done! How funny is this? This is my underlayment after tearing up tile! I totally love it so far....

I love the deep brown color against the bright white baseboard and baby yellow walls.

Here is more of a close up picture - I know they are EXACTLY like hardwood floors but for the price - which was about $50 including a can of poly for $40, I think they look pretty cool! .

This is the typical floor I started with. Big gaps, staples, nail holes, etc. I didnt fix everything because would have taken so much time and it wasnt important to me that they be perfect. As long as they looked great, the holes, scraped and such add character and they look "hand scraped" like in an old Irish tavern.

This type of can opener is my secret weapon for removing staples. It works WONDERFULLY! You put the bent point under the staple and push down. The pointy part can even be used to pry them up. I bought one at GoodWill for a quarter. Try it - you will be so happy they come up so easy will virtually no damage to the floor.

Any of the large gaps and staple holes, I did fill in with DAP latex wood filler. I used a lot of this stuff along with a putty scraper to make sure the surface was as smooth and level as possible.

After it was all filled in, it looked like this. Then I primed right over it for a smooth surface.

This is where I left off on day one when I got to this point. Fixed and primed with white primer - a smooth surface just waiting for something....

So I found brown Porch and Floor paint on clearance at Wal-Mart for $5.00 a gallon - YUP - only $5 bucks so I bought two gallons. It helped but still wasnt what I was looking for.

So I bought a pack of thick Sharpies and proceeded to add "plank lines" to see if that would give it a more realistic look. Well it helped but it was still so BROWN.

Enter the faux woodgraining kit. I have seen everyone use this on doors and tables but never on floors but I figured why not - if it as disaster, I can always paint over it. I made a black glaze out of black paint and a touch of water and started to experiment.

I brushed the glaze on and then used the woodworking tool to make knots and lines. It was actually fun! And when I stood up and looked at the progress - R U KIDDING ME? They looked Sweet!

This is the result I came up with. The floors are dark, the holes and dings and other imperfections make them look like they are "hand scraped" how funny is that?

I still have to touch them up and add a few coats of poly but I think they are awesome! Someday I will be able to afford real wood floors but until then, these will do just fine.

I absolutely love the result and will probably continue it into my living room and dining room as well.

Foyer Makeover Day 1 Ceiling and Floors

Well, I am quite pleased with the progress from day 1. Picture above, of course, is Erica Barrys dining room from everyones favorite movie, "Somethings Gotta Give". Funny how even though that movie was made in 2003 - almost ten years ago - its gorgeous interiors have stood the test of both time and blogland. I fell in love with the serenity of her dining room and so I knew in an instant it would be an inspiration for the color in my foyer. Creamy yellow walls and thick white molding! So pretty!

I wanted a neutral foyer as it was previously a deep hunter green and floral wallpaper and I was ready for calm. After looking at upwards of 60 samples of yellow and creamy tans, I decided upon Behr Baby Bee Yellow from the Disney collection. I bought it in the Spring and here it is now September and I am still quite satisfied with my choice.

So I decided to paint the foyer ceiling the same color as the walls and I really love the way it looks. It is hard to tell by the picture but it makes a huge difference.

Next, I turned my attention to my floors. I cannot afford hardwood floors and I do not want tile back so I think I am just going to fix em, prime em and paint em. I removed all the staples and filled in the holes.

I then filled the seams between the underlayment panels with wood filler and sanded it down. Then I primed them with Zinnser 123 primer for a clean and finished surface

Be careful not to paint yourself into a corner - I left a path to navigate the front door.

Ironically, it looked like this with the white ceramic tile so Im back to start. :-)

Looks quite different already - Im excited about the changes.

Day 2 tomorrow - more floor work and wall and staircase preparation commences. See ya then.
