Simple Changes for a Summery Cottage Style Look

This weekend I made some very simple and effective changes to my living and dining room that really ramped up the cottage style look I love so much.

I had two lucky breaks to kick things off - first I scored 3 sets of creamy white Ikea Aina linen drapes for a total price of $15 at a yard sale (WHOOP WHOOP!!!!!!). Thanks to the stitch witchery that Ikea loves so much, it was easy to pull the hems apart and re-iron them to the length I wanted.

Master Bedroom Makeover Cottage Style

With cottage style sweeping through my home, it was time to rethink my master bedroom decor. I had enjoyed the look I had going on, but it was not light, bright and airy.

I had a couple of boosts this year - Graham & Brown offered me free wallpaper and D. Lawless Hardware sent me a second set of the antique handles I had used on my antique washstand project. With my free wallpaper, a can of paint in a greige tone and a can of Ben Moore Simply White paint I took on the bedroom challenge once again...

I began by installing a high wainscot with the textured bead board wallpaper. I used 1x4 pre-primed mdf molding to cap the wainscot. Then I painted the molding to match the trim and I painted out the Lenox Tan paint with a half shade of CIL's Manuscript. I love this paint colour!!

Now that my dining room has new curtains and my hutch has a new paint job, it was time to change up the space a bit more.

I love my ladder back chairs. I have 3 of them, two that match and one that is slightly smaller. This is what they looked like originally.

Oy that orange!!!!! Thankfully now a distant memory...

Cottage Bathroom Home Run

If you've been a follower of my blog for any length of time, you know that the main bathroom in my home is my nemesis... Bathtub tiles that I despise, a floor that does NOT coordinate and a complete lack of storage. This weekend; however, I decided to deal with that floor. Floor paint experiment number two!

This was a very time consuming fix - sanding first, then priming with an oil-based primer (peee-yew!!!), 3 coats of white floor paint with 24 hours between coats and picking up innumerable pieces of cat hair, lint, dirt, whatever (cannot believe how much crap fell on the surface in between coats!!) and the previous owners who had used non-paintable silicone caulking EVERYWHERE. Ok, mini-meltdown over. I LOVE it!!!

I used Behr's Porch Floor Paint, a small foam roller and Purdy's tiniest sash brush and my secret weapon? a sticky lint brush to pick up all the crap as I went along... Seriously, I could not have managed without that lint brush!

A few weeks ago I stumbled on an unannounced clearance sale on Target's Rachel Ashwell shabby chic quilts. I bought a single sham and a twin sized quilt for a total price of $35. I had intended to use the quilt as a throw but when I got home, my plans changed...

My name is Anne and I have a linen addiction. Over the years I've accumulated many quilts in different styles, shapes and colours. I adore them!!! Only thing is, they are sitting in a linen closet instead of being on view. Thank you Target, for inspiring me to a guest room quilt explosion makeover!

JVAs lovely 15 m² shedworkingesque design for two writers in Oslo (yes, theres a Writers Cottage 1). The whole north-facing façade is made of glass, as is the desk. Its in the back garden of their home and, according to the architects:

"The clients wanted a space that would allow them to isolate themselves to focus on their writing and work, while at the same time offering a generous view over the surroundings. Their intention was that the project would work as an alternative to a cottage in the countryside."

Cottage Style Laundry Makeover

My laundry room got another makeover!

I have been steadily changing my house decor over to a mix of cottage-farmhouse. This past weekend I added shutter doors to my open laundry cupboard and also to hide my stacked washer and dryer from view. Here's the full tour!

Myrtle Cottage Garden Studio

Winner of the RIBA South West Award 2015, Myrtle Cottage Garden Studio is the fine work of Bath-based Stonewood Design who describe is as "space to work, to sew, to play guitar, to sleep, or as a hide to observe the woodland wildlife. The key driver to achieving the brief was to create a design which worked seamlessly with the natural forms and levels of the garden, in order that an architecture is created which is less of a building, and more of a landscape."

The designers add out that "the intensive planted roof disappears into the flora of its surroundings. The walls become stone garden walls which retain the undulating level changes on the site. The project has been accepted by the local deer community, who have been spotted wandering over and around the Garden Studio."

The shedworking space is clad in pre-patinated copper to blend with the natural colours of the landscape and features a sofa bed, wood burner, and cupboards inside.
