You know how it is, you find a new piece of furniture and place it in a room and then everything moves! Such was the case with my new farmhouse hutch. It is now in my small dining room which means I need to get rid of/relocate the backer's rack that I was using as a hutch.

Once I have done the work of making over a piece, I have so much trouble selling it... so instead I tried to come up with a new spot for placing my baker's rack in a house that is already too full of furniture. Sigh. Then again, I had a stroke of brilliance when I moved it into my back entryway.

Shopping Target Cartwheel Style

I love shopping at Target, and Im fortunate to have one just a few miles down the road from where I live, so when I had the opportunity to try out the new Target Cartwheel shopping app I was excited to find out what it was all about!
I know the inside of my Target like the back of my hand! Where do I go once inside? Well no matter what the purpose of my trip, there are a few departments that I always check out. I call it my Target B-Line! Check it out!

Some of my favorite departments to visit at Target are:
1. The lamp section in home decor – Target always seems to have a nice selection of stylish table lamps. Target has artsy and a nice mix of modern and new vintage style lamps. I always seem to find one that is just my style. I like that the shades and bases are marked small, medium, or large, and that you can mix and match different shades to different bases. I also recently bought some pretty white paper star lights on a string that I just love.

2. Frozen food - The Archer Farms Cook-in-a-bag homestyle seasoned whole turkey breast that comes frozen and bakes in a bag is to die for, and my kids constantly ask me to make that for dinner (I keep a few in my basement chest freezer!) There’s nothing like putting a frozen solid 3.5 pound turkey breast in the oven and within about four hours you have Thanksgiving in January!

3. Beauty section – I’m not a makeup junky by any means, but I always like to pick something up for myself thats just for me. We busy moms spend most all of our time taking care of our children, and often during the process, we forget to occasionally treat ourselves. My treat? Sometimes Ill pick out a new product to try, or I may buy a trendy new nail polish color, just for fun.

What does the Target Cartwheel app do?
Its like your own secret treasure trove of savings! Cartwheel is an app that you use on your iPhone, Droid, mobile web, table, or desktop that has secret savings and coupons that can only be found and used with the Cartwheel app. Cartwheel has over 700 offers (coupons) that you use on in-store purchases. (Note that Cartwheel offers are only used when shopping in the store and not available for online purchases.) Each guest starts with 10 "spots" for Cartwheel discount offers on your list.

How do you use Cartwheel?
After you sign into the app with either your email or Facebook login on your iPhone or Droid, all you do is scan any barcode on any item at Target and the app will show you if there is a Cartwheel offer for that item. You can also browse within the app before you leave home to see what Cartwheel savings are being offered by browsing each department right within the app.
(Facebook option: If you use your Facebook to sign in to the app, there is an option where you can see what Target Cartwheel offers your Facebook friends are using and vice versa. Of course, there is also the option to keep your Cartwheel list private so that only you can see it. No need to connect the app to Facebook if you do not want to, but it can be a nice way of sharing current Cartwheel discounts with friends.)

One of the best benefits of using Cartwheel is that all the Cartwheel offers that you receive can be used with any other Target discounts, coupons, any manufacturers coupons, as well as your REDcard discount! Cartwheel offers are also multi-use. That means that you can use any offer on your Cartwheel list as many times as you wish until the offer expires, with the following exceptions: limit of 4 items per offer, per transaction; limit of 6 Cartwheel scans per day. For example, if there was an offer for 10 percent off 20 ounce bottles of Coke, a guest could purchase 4 bottles of Coke in one transaction and the offer discount would be applied to all bottles of Coke. You could do this up to 6 times in one day, for a total of 24 bottles of Coke. Thats great savings!
Another thing thats interesting about the Target Cartwheel app is that each barcode generated by Cartwheel is unique to you and holds all of the offers on your Cartwheel list. All you need to do is simply scan the barcode one time at the point of purchase (after scanning any other discounts or coupons) and all the discounts on your list will be applied. How easy is that? If you shop at Target, you need to check Cartwheel out!

Simple Changes for a Summery Cottage Style Look

This weekend I made some very simple and effective changes to my living and dining room that really ramped up the cottage style look I love so much.

I had two lucky breaks to kick things off - first I scored 3 sets of creamy white Ikea Aina linen drapes for a total price of $15 at a yard sale (WHOOP WHOOP!!!!!!). Thanks to the stitch witchery that Ikea loves so much, it was easy to pull the hems apart and re-iron them to the length I wanted.

With cottage style sweeping through my home, it was time to rethink my master bedroom decor. I had enjoyed the look I had going on, but it was not light, bright and airy.

I had a couple of boosts this year - Graham & Brown offered me free wallpaper and D. Lawless Hardware sent me a second set of the antique handles I had used on my antique washstand project. With my free wallpaper, a can of paint in a greige tone and a can of Ben Moore Simply White paint I took on the bedroom challenge once again...

I began by installing a high wainscot with the textured bead board wallpaper. I used 1x4 pre-primed mdf molding to cap the wainscot. Then I painted the molding to match the trim and I painted out the Lenox Tan paint with a half shade of CIL's Manuscript. I love this paint colour!!

I have an old style, hand made night stand that I didn't terribly like much but it did the job. Then I got my "princess-and-the-pea" extremely high king-sized bed and this old style night table was much lower than the top of the mattress. Why are mattresses so huge these days anyway???

I made over the night stand several years ago, stenciling the top with a Fleur-de-lis pattern that I liked but with my new cottage style look I decided to take the time to fix up this night table once and for all.

Shedworking reader Neil McQuillan has written in with details about a renovation project he has just completed.

"This rarest and most sought style in the Boulton and Paul revolving summerhouse range has been professionally restored by the highly respected restoration carpenters ‘Mushroom of Farnham’. Since its recovery from a vicarage in Tunbridge it has undergone a full deconstructed restoration. All wood panels have had all old lead paint fully removed to bare wood. It has then been primed, undercoated and painted in Farrow and Ball paint. (Interior ‘Borrowed Light’ exterior ‘Cornforth White’).

"The doors and windows have also been stripped of all lead paint and primed, undercoated and painted with Farrow and Ball ‘All White’. All glazing has been removed and replaced with safety glass using putty in the traditional method. All hinges and catches are original with all screws replaced with new slot head screws that have been aged to look original. The original door lock is in place and now has two new keys. The turntable mechanism works perfectly; it has been greased and now sits on two inch thick oak boards. The old roofing felt has been removed and replaced.

"The measurements are 8.5ft across the front, 6.5ft across the side and 9ft high to the internal apex. The price of £12900.00 includes transportation and erection to anywhere in England and Wales. Delivery to Scotland would incur additional cost. A photographic account of all restoration undertaken will be made available to the purchaser. Edging Idaho Style

Many posts back I asked How on Earth you make a bed look like this one. Not so much the peonies but the edge itself. Clean and neat. I have done everything but this until just recently. Several people commented on how to get this done. Anna from from Flower Garden Girl blog suggested cutting in strait down from the lawn side and angling the cut towards that cut from the bed side. I drew you a picture to illustrate what I think she meant by that. And no, when I say I drew you a picture, I am not being a smart alleck. I really did draw you a picture with the paint program on my computer. Someone really ought to come up with a better program for all my garden drawings, that program is junk. But for todays lesson it will suffice.

The dark black lines indicate the angles of the shovel or edger you use to cut into this area. I did this on several of my beds so far and it works like a dream. It looks nice and clean and I cant wait to see how it holds up and how often I will have to redo it. I also plan to back fill the area a little with my super fine bark mulch just to give it a completed look. I did some research today on edgers themselves. Flowrgirl1 from Live To Garden suggested a tool she found at Kmart several years back. It is a half-moon shaped edger with a T-bar handle that she says works very well. The one she uses is made my Martha Stewart. I also found a huge assortment of them on Amazon and the one I think I will order has a foot shaped top that you step on with your whole foot and not just your toes.Kind of like taking a big step with a built in spine on the sole. It seems less likely I will hurt myself with that kind than the traditional. You can also cut your main edge with a power edger and go back for your second, angled cut with a shovel. I used a shovel for the whole thing. It worked fine. I still have the island bed to do but the rain wont seem to let up long enough to get that done. Maybe tomorrow morning.

This is similar to what I mean by a step-on edger. This one was sold by Gardeners Supply but is no longer available. Dont know why but I like the idea. I will have to go in search of just the right one and let you all know what I find.

This one is an example of a Half-Moon shaped edger. I thing it looks wide enough to do the job without breaking the arch of your foot if your lawn is like mine. Very dense and hard to dig in. This one has a round handle as opposed to a T-bar handle but it ought to work the same way. Funny how garden tools are finally starting to be designed with ergonomics in mind. Took them long enough.

Make YOUR PERSONAL Black Walnut Stain
