We built two more chicken house walls on Sunday. The wall they guys are holding up is only 3/4 done as it still need 4 more feet added to the top to make it even with the side wall on each end. That portion of the wall will have a 12" tall, 5 wide window across the south wall, up at the top, to add light into the coop so the girls will lay all winter. I will still need to add extra light in the morning but that will help. The east wall (far wall not yet built in this picture) will also have a big window that slides open, that will provide much light without cooking the poor things in the summer. My husband said he reached the end of his ability with framing after these two were done so now we wait for our friend to come back and help finish the framing. Maybe Wednesday. It is so nice of him to help us, he has so much of his own stuff to work on. But I am seriously impatient. I tried my hardest to talk Doyle into trying to build the rest without help but he wasnt biting. Darn it! Just thought I would show the progress!

Foyer Progress Front Door Spruce Up!

The foyer is coming along nicely and I just finished a project I had absolutely no intention of doing - my front door. It was a very pretty solid oak door and sidelights but the other night I got "an itch" to maybe paint it. I know wood purists will be furious but I did keep the actual door natural wood - I just painted the side lights and added a header. It wasnt much work and I am thrilled with the new look.

This is what I started with. I KNOW I KNOW - it is a solid oak door and not meant to be painted. But I just found it to be a little blah. I wanted a change and I struggled for days whether or not to touch this door with the dreaded white paint brush. :-)

So, I started painting and almost as sure as I finished a white side light, I was terrified I had make a mistake. Even when both sidelights were done, I wasnt quite as thrilled as I hoped I would be. It needed something - it was too boring. So I looked around for some scrap wood and I found a 1 x 2, 1 x 4 and 1 x 6 in various colors. I painted them all ultra white with cabinet and trim paint - so thick and creamy its awesome!

I nailed them together to form this header.

I added a piece of crown molding and wa-lah! Instant header. I secured it to the wall with two nails into the studs and some liquid nails.

I really like the result - it adds character and ties in with the rest of the white molding. I have to finish painting it and filling some trim holes but I am quite pleased.

Foyer Progress Front Door Spruce Up!

All Dressed Up

Here is a little before and after for you~ I love before and afters. This is the island bed on April 29 of this year. I was wanting to edge it and top dress it with pretty bark mulch. Last year when I built this bed, the store where I buy my special bark mulch was out. So I was forced to use some of what I like and a whole bunch of really junky stuff from the big box store. This year I started stocking up on my favorite kind and tonight I used most of it. Time to reload!

I edged this whole bed and removed the sod layer to use as filler in another project I have going. It should compost down in that area and I did not want it here. Then I backfilled the area between the lawn and the rocks. I toted tons of this mulch from my garden shed to this bed and started top dressing the inside of the bed around all the plantings. Now it looks so pretty and clean. My edges are somewhat wobbly but they should straiten out soon, some parts the lawn were not as grown in from last years tilling of this area so I seeded those spots and it ought to look great soon.

I was thinking of planting some kind of specimen tree in this bed, maybe more than one. I really like dogwood trees but was not sure it would stay alive here. I need to do some research. I also love the American Redbud and with proper pruning it should not overpower this area. Another thing I thought would look nice would be a topiary style dwarf spruce. I do not have a formal garden but those trees are so fun and they dont grow too big for the space. One of my other project plans is to begin perimeter planting but that will require a massive bed outlining this entire yard. I need to finish all the other things we have in progress before I start that one. It will likely have to be one of the only things I have going when that one starts. I am so thankful to all the great folks who commented on how to do this. Even with all the gardening I have done, that is one thing I never knew how to do. Edging is a lot of work but the result is so worth it.

Cancer Check Up Im NOT dying!

Hello! I dont normally ever blog about my cancer and the journey it takes me on everyday, but today, I feel compelled to do so. I spent the day at the University of Chicago cancer center and, if cancer has never touched your life or someone you love, you cant begin to understand how daunting it is to live with this disease.

I am a survivor of both ovarian cancer and stage 3 breast cancer. It doesnt mantter how far out your survival is, you still live everyday with a bit of fear hovering just below the surface.

The majority of this summer has been spent dealing with sciatic pain and being sidelined due to this new malady and a few other symptoms which caused me to believe that my cancer had returned. It literally sucks the life out of you! It is hard to find joy in the little things and when people start talking about Halloween, Autumn hay rides, apple cider, Christmas parties, college football, etc. it just adds to the anxiety. All you can focus on is going back into treatment. Losing your hair AGAIN, radiating that skin that is so sore and thin from the first round of treatment. It robs you of your sleep, your appetite, you zest for life.

Today, I received good news. As far as they can tell, there is no sign of active disease. Whoo hoo. You walk out of that exam room, the oncology department and out the doors of the hospital into the summer breeze with the warm sun on your face and you cannot believe the weight of the world that is lifted off your shoulders. Sitting in the waiting room, you see people with no hair, thin and tired, worried, scared, crying, etc. It is daunting just to be in the room with all of these people in the midst of treatment and you are instantly transported back to the time when you were in the fight for your life be it chemo, radiation, surgeries, etc. You sat in these same chairs, waiting for test results, waiting for your first chemo treatment, your first injection, etc. You cannot believe how much pain and suffering you can endure when you know that the gift of "cancer free" or health is on the other side. When youre going through hell, keep on going - its the only choice you have.

Those people who sit next to me with their oxygen tanks, in wheel chairs, I just want to stand up and scream, "Its ok. You are going to be ok. I was in your shoes a while back and its true, the hair does grow back!

I just feel so relieved that I am given another 6 months until my next check up! I am looking forward to a good nights sleep! The return of my appetite and disappearance of my extreme anxiety. Thanks for the read - I just felt the need to let people know how my day was. It was quite spectacular! Now, back to projects! ;-)
