1 3 4 More Walls Up!
We built two more chicken house walls on Sunday. The wall they guys are holding up is only 3/4 done as it still need 4 more feet added to the top to make it even with the side wall on each end. That portion of the wall will have a 12" tall, 5 wide window across the south wall, up at the top, to add light into the coop so the girls will lay all winter. I will still need to add extra light in the morning but that will help. The east wall (far wall not yet built in this picture) will also have a big window that slides open, that will provide much light without cooking the poor things in the summer. My husband said he reached the end of his ability with framing after these two were done so now we wait for our friend to come back and help finish the framing. Maybe Wednesday. It is so nice of him to help us, he has so much of his own stuff to work on. But I am seriously impatient. I tried my hardest to talk Doyle into trying to build the rest without help but he wasnt biting. Darn it! Just thought I would show the progress!

Time for another installment of 2013 in Review!
2013 was the year that I found "The Look" I wanted for my home. I thought the rule was 1 year in your home!! Oh well, 3 years is ok by me - I now know exactly what I do and don't like and this year I was able to put it together in a way that pleased me.
This was also the year that rooms came together. I finished the 2nd bathroom (thank you God!), guest room, laundry room, master bedroom, living room and dining room. Yay!! I also made over the main bathroom for the 4th time. Yep, I change my decor like I change my clothes... well, almost!

PLAN AHEAD
My garden plan helped me with everything from how to space my plants to when to put them in the ground and where. You could draw up a plan on graph paper or generate one using an online garden planner like I did. I used Growveg.com, which lets you customize a large garden space from scratch. Gardeners.com also offers a planner that is good for smaller spaces and has preplanned gardens to keep it simple.
3 VEGETABLES TO START EARLY
These veggies love cool weather (you can plant Thoma few weeks before the last frost) and grow quickly. So plant them first and you’ll enjoy the rewards of your work in a hurry.
Lettuce: I planted different types of lettuce all over my garden, wherever I could find room. It’s forgiving and grows fast enough that you’ll be harvesting young leaves for salads within a few weeks. Plant seeds every two weeks in the spring so you have a constant supply.
Turnips: I never thought of themas a spring vegetable so I was surprised to harvest turnips before anything else. They take about a month from seed to harvest and have a peppery and sweet flavor when they’re picked fresh.
Peas: We squeezed ours in close together and they yielded pounds and pounds of sugary sweet snap peas. Pea plants produce more in cooler weather than they do once it heats up. And by the heat of the summer, they’re pretty much fizzled out so you can plant a late-season crop in their spot.
3 BASIC TOOLS
Trowel: Use to dig small holes for planting transplants.
Stirrup Hoe: Pull up young weeds at the root with just a gentle back-and-forth motion.
Garden rake: Level beds and filter out large stones that may interrupt seedling growth.
Of course if you need any help with your gardening you can find plenty of guides around my blog to help you with your gardening step by step. You can even print your guide and take it with you when you need it for reference out side in your garden.
In the photo above, in case you are wondering what the plants are, bottom row - purple scallions, Italian parsley, Dino kale, anise-flavored fennel, baby lettuce salad mix; top row - baby bok choi, sugar snap peas, sweet Japanese salad turnips and a cute little broccoli.

I know, I know! Today is July 6th! Two days after the Fourth of July holiday! But for me, the whole red, white and blue palette never goes out of style. So, I just thought I would share some images of my love for all things America from the past few weeks!
I love all things Disney and Walt Disney World is amazing for the 4th of July! Since I couldnt get there this year, I decided to add a touch of the magic to my front porch planters.

My Moms antique cherub statue - I love to decorate it for the seasons as a tribute to her.
Here is the front door - I cant get enough bunting! ;-)
The weekend started at work. I love to have the kids wear red, white and blue for tennis camp. We decorate the nets and I love to go big for the holiday!
I spend the holiday weekend in Notre Dame, IN and also a coastal community in Michigan. Even though I would love to spend a few weeks of the summer in Nantucket, Cape Cod, or Kennebunkport, I am a Midwest girl, born and raised, and there is no better place to spend the holiday weekend than with friends and family in Pure Michigan.
I found this decorative chalkboard at Marshalls on clearance for $15 because of the large crack you can see in the picture. I was going to use it for a ceiling medallion but I think I have decided to keep it a chalkboard. This was my FIRST foray into chalkboard art - it was actually pretty fun to do. I am left-handed to smudging was an issue I have to work on. But it was like coloring when you are a kid.
On Sunday morning, we went to Mass on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. After church, we came home and had patriotic waffles on the patio al fresco. Being cooped up in the house all winter with blizzards and polar vortexes, any chance we get to eat outside, we definitely take it!
Dressed for mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame. Campus is in full bloom and gorgeous! The skirt is an oldie but a goodie. It was Cambridge Dry Goods and every time I go to donate it, I cant do it as I usually wear it this time every year. USA!

I am always known for bringing chocolate covered strawberries and this holiday was no different.
We also made patriotic cobbler with fresh Maine blueberries and Washington cherries. It was delish!
Always the easiest weekend for which to pack! ;-)
Found these lobster glasses at GoodWill for 49 cents each. Come to find they are vintage
from the Red Lobster restaurant. Sweet!
I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend! Its always sad to see the 4th of July holiday come to an end because it means summer is half over and here in the Midwest, it feels like it hasnt even started.

By the time Max reached the age of 5 months, he had a very large vocabulary of sounds to share with us. He chirruped to say hello, he trilled when he wanted something, he had a tiny, quiet meow and a whole range of other sounds that he used as he bounced around the house. He was having conversations, I don’t know with whom, but he was definitely chatting with someone.
